The Important Tasks Of A Racehorse Trainer

By Lena Stephenson

Horses are dependable and loyal animals that have been the companion of man in doing strenuous work or traveling to distant places. They have been around the property of man and coexisting with humanity since the old times. In the past, they have been used as battle allies in wars among different kingdoms.

Horses are fast and can make human work a lot faster when they are around especially when it comes to transporting heavy things. They are even trained for racing which is one of the oldest pastimes of Westerners. It is a huge challenge for a racehorse trainer to tame, take care, establish connection, and train this animal.

The main task of a trainer is to make sure that the animal gets the proper diet and nutrition to achieve a conditioned body fit for special speed, agility, and endurance trainings. The equines are known to be athletic animals and with adequate training, they can actually go over their natural speed.

Most of these trainers are believed to be horse whisperers. It is incredible how they can actually make these animals follow them and be loyal to them. They are also responsible in keeping these animals healthy making sure that they get veterinary attention when needed. It helps if the trainer is an experienced veterinarian as well but this is not necessary.

They are also the ones to plan out what kind of animal conditioning and workout is appropriate for the age, size, and type of horse. Equine physiology must also be familiarized so that in case there are injuries, they will know the cause and the possible first aid attention. Hence, they can also be called the caretakers themselves who will ensure the safety, health, and protection of the equine.

Any problem or progress that the equine is undergoing must be reported to the owners. This is also one of the responsibilities of a trainer. He or she must make sure that the owners are updated. They are the ones who provide the needs and financial support. Another thing to consider is to make sure the equine is sociable.

The importance of socializing them is that this will allow them to be comfortable in crowded places. The tracks are surrounded with hundreds or even thousands of spectators, so they should not be wary of humans and other equines. These animals can get really stressed and the trainer must be aware of that more than anything else.

Handling animals must come with certifications and legalities. A license is needed before one is eligible to train. There are college degrees and training courses about training. There are different licensing agreements in each state and must be followed through as much as possible.

The most critical part of performing the responsibilities is to become passionate about it. Trainers have to love what they are doing and above all, love the equines they are teaching. They must not physically hurt or stress these beautiful animals.
