Why You Should Have A Drinking Water Test Kit

By Leticia Jensen

Water plays such a major part in our daily lives that we rarely give it a second thought. We assume it is going to be there when we need it, and that it is also going to be pure enough to keep us safe. We use it for all the major aspects of our daily lives, like washing, cooking and drinking, and we would miss it if it was not there.

However, we often hear stories of the supply becoming contaminated. These are accompanied by people becoming extremely sick, something that we do not want to happen to our children. In order to reassure ourselves, we can now use a drinking water test kit to monitor the state of our water supply.

If we get our supply from the local authority we would naturally assume that they test to make sure that their customers stay safe. When it leaves their filtration system it is as pure as they can make it, but before it reaches your home it goes through miles of pipework, and then to your shower heads and faucets. All of these can be contaminated, and whereas the pipework may be the responsibility of the local utility company, they are not responsible for what is inside your home.

If any part of the system that it passes through has not been well maintained there is a good possibility that corrosion has set in. Pollutants such as agricultural fertiliser, harmful chemicals, and lead could easily have got into the supply. All of these can be tested for impurities to make sure that your family is kept safe.

It can be hard to accept that such a harmless looking liquid can cause such terrible pain and anguish to a family. Lead poisoning, heart disease, and legionnaires disease, can all be associated with polluted water. Purchasing a a method of testing your personal supply is such a small thing to do, but can play such a large part in your family's well-being.

These kits have made it very simple, because before they were available, if you were concerned about your water supply you would have to contact the local laboratory. This could be quite expensive, and the results would not be instant. Now you can use one of these home testers, and if you feel that there is something wrong you can then contact an independent laboratory for more extensive testing of your supply.

A lot of the bacteria and viruses that can cause problems to humans and animals do not actually smell or affect the taste of the liquid, so this is where the concerned person must carry out tests. It is important that you understand the results, or you could get extremely worried. There will always be some pollutants in the water, but they have to reach certain levels before they can cause any harm.

If you have any doubt about the purity of your supply you must contact a specialist. This is even more important if there is a pregnant person, or a child under 12 months old, living in the household. This is the situation where it is better to be safe rather than sorry, and nobody will chastise you for being concerned in such a situation.
