Multivitamins Are Good For Health

By Doug Keeney

A body requires a certain amount of nutrients in order to function at its best. Much of this can be obtained through proper dietary care, though that is not always possible for some. That is why multivitamins are so important.

Ideally, a person would receive all of their required vitamins and minerals through the foods that they eat. A well balanced and healthy diet containing the required servings of fruits, vegetables, low-fat proteins and whole grains should be sufficient at providing for a body's needs. Unfortunately, very few people can actually eat properly all the time.

Eating a healthily balanced diet may not always be enough to keep things in check. External stimulation such as processed foods, personal stress, air pollution can actually deplete the nutrients and block proper absorption. A lot of environmental and emotional issues can counteract a well planned diet.

Deficiencies in some vitamins can have serious negative effects on a person's health. Though most countries rarely deal with scurvy, rickets or pellagra anymore, there are other nutritional lacks that can result in issues with one's heart, eyes and even promote cancer. Several neurological disorders have been associated with low B-12 levels.

A daily supplement could help ensure one receive their recommended doses of required nutrients. Speaking to one's physician before beginning a vitamin regime is highly recommended, especially if already taking prescription medications. Also, keep in mind that the health needs of a child are not the same as an adults.

For the most part, multivitamins are a great way to replace nutrients that are missing from diet or that are depleted because of personal stress or environmental influences. A doctor should be consulted to make sure that taking supplements will not create an over abundance of anything because too much is as bad as too little. Available in several forms, liquid and softgels are easier to absorb than capsules or the harder packed tablets.
